- Add your accounts: a checking account, any cards, loans or savings.
- Add transactions with File ▸ New Transaction…, or import them from a CSV file in Settings ▸ Import & Export.
- Add your bills on the Bills page so you get reminders.
Common questions
Where is my data stored?
Only on your Mac. There is no account and no cloud copy. That is why a backup matters.
How do I back up my data?
Open Settings ▸ Import & Export and choose Export Backup…. This saves a single .pig file with everything in it. Keep a copy somewhere safe, such as an external drive or your own cloud storage.
How do I restore a backup or move to a new Mac?
Install the app on the new Mac, then double-click the .pig file, or choose Import Backup… in Settings. Restoring replaces what is currently in the app.
Does it sync to my iPhone or other Macs?
No. Piggybank Financial is Mac-only and does not sync. This is also why nothing is ever uploaded. Use a backup file to move your data.
Can it connect to my bank or online accounts?
No, and that is on purpose. Piggybank Financial never links to a bank, card or online account and never asks for a login. You go through your own statements and enter the transactions yourself, which keeps you close to your numbers and keeps your data private.
Can I import transactions from my bank?
Yes, from a file you download yourself, in CSV format. Most banks let you download one. Go to Settings ▸ Import & Export ▸ Import Transactions. Very large files into an account that already has tens of thousands of transactions can take a while.
I'm not getting reminders.
Open Settings ▸ Reminders. The status should say On. If it says it's off, choose Open Notification Settings and allow notifications for Piggybank Financial. Use Send a Test Notification to check. Reminders are sent by macOS, so they also arrive when the app is closed, as long as the Mac is awake.
How do I change or delete a transaction?
The register is read-only so nothing changes by accident. Double-click a transaction for a closer look, then press Edit…, or right-click it and choose Edit Transaction…. Deleting one half of a transfer or payment removes the other half too.
Why can't I change the amount of a payment or transfer?
It is shared with the other account. Delete it and enter it again with the new amount.
How do I start over?
Take a backup first, then use Settings ▸ Data ▸ Erase All Data. The app quits and starts fresh the next time you open it. This cannot be undone.
The app is slow.
It is designed to stay quick with very large histories. If something feels slow, email support with roughly how many transactions you have.
